Oh the joys of social media! There I was just casually browsing the endless void that is the infamous blue and white website (no…no not THAT blue and white website…I meant Facebook…) when I noticed a good old ping in my notifications as someone had recommended me for doing a review.

So one quick jaunt over to the status and exchange of messages with one Amy Baird, I was introduced to hardcore outfit The Sarum Rite and their track ‘Church’ (with an accompanying music video). The single is a taste of the upcoming ‘Shirecore’ EP the band has in the works and is also an introduction of the band to me. So overall, despite all the groans and moans we may have about social media…it does come in handy sometimes.

To start – the music. The overall vibe The Sanem Rite gave me were early Cancer Bats, this track in particular reminding me of a mixture of their tracks ‘Pneumonia Hawk’ and ‘Lucifer’s Rocking Chair’. The track starts slow and crunchy, building into a more thrashier riff that will see circle pits and mosh pits a-plenty when played at live shows. Just as the group use the slower riff to calm things down, you’re slapped in the face with the faster riff to get you back into the overall pace and vibe of the tune. The group vocals used within the chorus section added an extra level of oomph when meet with the crunch the group use musically. There’s some fancy footwork and delicious riffs thrown in by the band, ones that’ll definitely get the heads banging.

Visually, the video is simplistic. Utilising a mixture of shots of the band performing and the story of the song, it follows the protagonist as they awaken in the woods alone…that is until we see a mysterious figure watching them. As the protagonist flees, we see the figure is never too far away. Eventually, the protagonist comes across the band playing the song and joins them. The figure who’s been stalking the protagonist approaches but does nothing, eventually backing away and disappearing from sight. Whilst that might sound anti-climactic, it gets you thinking…what was the intention of this figure? Were they there to help guide the protagonist to his destination? Were they intending to use him as a sacrifice for something sinister? The sudden closure of the song will give the fans plenty of space to interpret this in their own way.

Overall, it’s a clever song with a simple yet clever video. For the first time hearing The Sarum Rite, it was definitely a hooky start and whetted the taste buds for whatever they have cooking with the upcoming EP. Who knows, maybe we’ll meet the mysterious figure from the video and found out just what their final goals will be.
