Time for us to visit a band who have really been booming in the scene lately – metalcore/nu-metal young’uns Heartstrung. The group are really making a name for themselves lately. They smashed their first round at Nottingham’s Metal To The Masses, landed an opening slot for Raging Speedhorn and Kill The Lights and just continue to push themselves to new levels when it comes to their craft.

Their latest release ‘Cold Blooded’, which follows on from their first single ‘Ashes of Time’, shows the band have got plenty hidden under their belts and also show they a large amount of potential waiting to burst onto the scene and melt our faces. ‘Cold Blooded’ comes in with a punch that sees the band meld the styles of

metalcore, nu-metal and hardcore as they build up into the first verse. After the first time listening to this, I got vibes of System of a Down, early Deftones and even a minor splash of The Gallows. The standout part musically has to be the solo we get after that good old smack of the drum cymbal (which we all know is the universal sign of ‘please evacuate all elderly folk and small children, this pit is about to get CRAZY’). That’s not to say the rest of the band don’t deliver because quite simply…they do. The heavy crunchy riffs really pack a wallop from start to finish and really show a group that have melded their skills together perfectly.

This of course is all met with the vocals of Theo, who delivers throughout the song with incredible energy. Vocally, I do feel they needed a teeny bit more oomph in the cleaner sections (and I literally mean the teeniest amount) to help them stand out, but the growls used for ‘COLD BLOODED’ really slap you in the teeth. Overall, the vocals (both through lyrical content and style) are the icing on the cake for a track that delivers from starting note to finishing rings.

Having already a shared a stage with the lads, I can tell you from both sides of the stage – Heartstrung are definitely aiming for bigger stages and you’d be daft not to check them out whether its live or through the old streaming platforms
