To quote the famous Al Capone when playing Michael Corelone in 1990’s The Godfather Part III – just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!
Why am I quoting this particular line? You can blame that there lot over at Mosaic Music, who have thrown another cracker under my nose so I can offer my rantings and musings. Who are we visiting this time? Manchester alt-grunge-rock group The Island, who have dropped their new single ‘A Measure of Monster’. The track not only serves as the band’s debut single, but also as a taster of the band’s upcoming album ‘Liminal’ and I have to say, it’s an interesting introduction to the group. It’s got punch, it’s got grit, it’s got a special feature of McDonald’s
nuggets in the accompanying music video…I mean they’re onto a bit of a winner really, although that depends on what dip they chose to have with said nuggets.
The overall song gives off a ‘Slither’ by Velvet Underground vibe, splashed with styles of Biffy Clyro here and there as well. The intro helps draw the listener into a song that full of energy, incorporating a groovy yet hard rocking rhythm and gravelly, punkish vocals to ensure its stuck in the brain long after it’s finished. The switch from heavy to a brief cleaner section helps mixes the song up a bit, giving you a ‘calm before the storm’ effect ready for when the band crash back in for the last chorus of the song.
The meaning of the song is open to interpretation, as the band have revealed little detail about the overall message. Listening to the lyrics and watching the accompanying video, it leaves me with the interpretation that there are people in the world who are happy to take advantage of something and reveal how much of a monster they can be in their own little ways. Again, with the band leaving this concept ambiguous, it leaves the song open for fans to discuss their ideas amongst each other and is a clever way of making them bond.
As before, The Island have slapped us with a tasty little introduction into their world and it’ll be interesting to see how the band evolve from here with the release of the upcoming album which should be appearing later this year. Kudos to you!
