Life can be chaotic when you have multiple things on the go. You can easily lose track of time and forget to give yourself chance to breathe as you chase after your tail in a frantic circle. That’s how things have felt for Southampton quintet Parting With Origin who have been busy since 2023. Releasing their ‘We All Wear Our Curses’ EP, storming the EMP stage of Bloodstock 2024 and playing multiple shows across the country…all whilst seeing in a new vocalist. All this chaos means finding time to breathe, and after taking a break during the winter period, we can hear how the group have handled this chaos with their upcoming track ‘The Fragile Space’.

Reflecting on ideas such as chaos and harmony, the band introduce us to the track with a eerie build up utilising synths/keyboards and a building guitar riff that’ll have you questioning are we embracing a chaotic or harmonic tone. The answer? You’re getting a little bit of both throughout, cleverly reflecting the battle of the two aspects within the mindset of us all.

Crushing riffs to melodic melodies on the guitars. Powerful drums to a gentle beat to keep the tone. Chaotic growls to melodic echoes from the soul. Parting With Origin throw it all together whilst keeping the song flowing smoothly. One of two stand out parts for me was the chorus, which has some incredible power from vocalist Dan in the melodic cleans. Utilising the power of bandmates Ethan, Mat, Dipen and James on their respective instruments, the group are able to make the listener’s hair stand on end and send chills down the spine as they build back into the verses. The other section that stood out to me was the bridge, using what sounds like a music box style effect alongside the guitar riffs to emphasis the overall feeling from the song.

Fans will be pulled into this song with the group’s use of ‘We’ throughout the track, used to remind us all that this internal battle of chaos and harmony is one we all face together and one we can use to help each other rather than suffering in silence alone. The clever back and forth of both the lyrics and vocally styles also helps paint the idea of the traditional ‘devil and angel’ on your shoulder, both trying to make their voice heard over the other as we deal with all the feelings during these internal battles.

Parting With Origin have tapped into a brilliant sound for their return with this track, and it’ll be interesting to see how they break through their own chaos and reach new levels of creativity using the lessons they’ve learnt during this time.
